Getting Back into Your Exercise Routine

Happy 4th of July to my American friends!

I just got back from the cottage today and with a view like this...

...it was really hard to leave. ;)

I tried to stay active with some walking and swimming, but my fitness regime fell by the waist side in favour of sitting by the fire and roasting marshmallows.

It is sometimes tough to keep up our workouts when the weather gets warm and we are faced with vacations and long weekends.

So, how do you get back into your regular routine after you have taken a break?

Here are some tips to help.

  1. Enjoy your time off.  Don't beat yourself up if you haven't exercised for a few days.  It is perfectly alright to take it easy. Remember, the mind and body need rest too.
  2. Take it slow.  If you have been off for a weekend (or longer), don't jump right back in to an intense routine.  Start with walking and some light weight training or stretching.
  3. Try something new.  This is a great time to try a new low-impact activity to shake up your workout.  How about yoga or pilates? :)
  4. Find a buddy.  If you are really having a hard time getting back into the swing of your workouts, find a friend for extra motivation and support.

Do you find it difficult to workout again after some time off?  Any tips to share?

Stay Healthy,
Tracy
